1. ABEJA (Season 1), deep learning platform, secures $38M series C round

ABEJA announced that it has raised 4.25 billion yen (about $38.4 million) in a series C round. Participating investors are SBI Investment, Daikin Industries, TBS Innovation Partners, Topcon, Japan Post Capital and Musashi Seimitsu Industry, in addition to existing investors including PNB-Inspire Ethical Fund, Nvidia and Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ).
The company uses the funds to set up AI management locations in ASEAN countries and the US for their flagship cloud Abeja Platform, enhance their vertical-focused SaaS platform Abeja Insight, strengthen R&D efforts and improve intellectual property management, plus hire talented staffers in the deep learning space.

2. Fintech firm Alpaca (Season 2) launches “AlpacaForecast AI Prediction Matrix” for Bloomberg users

AlpacaJapanCo., Ltd. has announced a partnership with Bloomberg L.P. and the launch of a price forecasting application “AlpacaForecast AI Prediction Matrix” for Bloomberg users.
The “AlpacaForecast AI Prediction Matrix” is an application that utilizes Alpaca’s large-scale data processing technology and deep learning technology and shows real-time short-term forecasts for major markets. The company has decided to develop this application in hope that it would bring advanced AI market forecasting capabilities to the global financial community, right to their desks.

3. Smart security, Secual (Season 5) raises $5.4M and announces a new management team

Secual provides a smart sensor attached to windows and doors and a gateway at home. The startup announced 600 million yen ($5.4M) of fundraising from Sompo Holdings, Sekisui Chemical, Kaga Electronics, and KI-Start Real Estate. With the 4 investors, Secual plans to develop a new joint business respectively. It also announced the new CEO, Masakzu Kikuchi. (in Japanese)

4. Orange Fab Asia held the Tokyo Demo Day of Spring 2018 season

Tokyo Demo Day of Spring 2018 season took place on 25th June at Dock Toranomon. 21 startups from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore pitched and exhibited to over 100 guests from various industries.
